Stay of Execution Denied for Georgia’s Oldest Death Row Inmate

Brandon Astor Jones

COBB COUNTY Ga., The Georgia Supreme Court denied the stay of execution for Brandon Astor Jones Tuesday.

Jones is scheduled to be put to death at 7:00pm Tuesday night for the 1979 murder of Roger Tackett, a manager of a Cobb County Tenneco gas station and convenience store.  Tackett was doing paperwork when Jones and another man broke in and killed him.  Jones’ accomplice Van Roosevelt Soloman was executed in 1985.  Jones is 72-years-old, making him the state’s oldest death row inmate.

In addition to denying Jones’ motion for a stay of execution, the state Supreme Court has also denied his request to appeal a ruling last Friday by the Butts County Superior Court. The Superior Court both denied his motion for a stay and dismissed his claim that the execution would be unconstitutionally “cruel and unusual” and “an arbitrary and disproportionately severe sentence.” Justice Robert Benham and Justice Carol Hunstein dissented.
