Albuquerque man fakes winning Powerball jackpot

LBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man claiming to have won the Powerball jackpot says it was a prank.

“My wife and I just won the $1.5 billion lottery,” said Lucas Jackson in a Facebook video posted Wednesday night.

In the video, Jackson shows off his so-called winning lottery ticket.

“My hand is shaking right now. I can’t even, I’m just at a loss for words guys,” he said. “We actually have every single winning number in the Powerball.”

The Eastern New Mexico University Masters student then goes on to say he won’t be on Facebook for awhile. After that his friends and family start commenting.

“A lot of people were congratulating me, but some were actually asking me for money saying oh yeah, don’t forget about this $50,000 or $100,000, $200,000, I would love it,” said Jackson.

Jackson claimed he was the one who bought the winning ticket at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California. Chino Hills did in fact have a Powerball winner, but it wasn’t Jackson.

That’s because Jackson’s ticket is a fake. He manipulated it on his computer to look like a winner.

“It was a social experiment. I wanted to see what it was really like to win the lottery and how do people react,” he said.

Jackson said he wanted to find out how winning millions upon millions would change the way people treat him.

“Sure enough I was getting phone calls that weren’t even on my contacts list,” he said.

He said about 30 people called him shortly after he announced he had won. He said at least half of the people who called were not people he talked to on a regular basis.

KRQE News 13 asked Jackson what he learned from the prank.

“I learned that I need to think of another prank because this one won’t work again, obviously,” he said.

Jackson said he never expected the prank to go this far.

He plans to explain his social experiment to his friends on Facebook Thursday night.
