Latest on plane crash at Savannah / Hilton Head Airport

The Airfield at the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is back open after a plane ended up in a ditch Wednesday morning.A plane ended up in the ditch at the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport Wednesday morning.

Airport officials say the plane,identified as a Pilatus Aircraft Ltd, tail number N978AF departing Savannah, GA en route to Lexington, KY, took off and had to veer back around to make an emergency landing when it crashed into the ditch.  It happened just after 8:30am.

Airport Fire and Rescue, handled by the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard, responded to the crash and found the plane resting in a ditch, west of Taxiway F. The pilot and one passenger were transported to a local hospital. The aircraft is registered to Upper Deck Holdings Inc. of Portsmouth, NH.

The Federal Aviation Administration regional office will be investigating the incident on behalf of the NTSB.
