A Pooler Elementary School teacher gets a boost in bringing agricultural learning to her students. Latrisha Dukes’ class is one of four across the state to receive the 2015 Dr. Joe B. Crane Classroom Grant. The $500 grant is awarded by the Georgia Agribusiness Council.
Dukes will use the funds for her “Seeds of Opportunity” Garden Project to purchase items like seeds and seedlings, soil, compost, fertilizer and a shed – along with gardening tool kits for the students use.
The objective of the project is for students to refurbish an existing school garden while learning about Georgia grown crops. Students will also interact with pupils outside of our community to collaborate and share progress and ideas via Skype, along with creating a garden blog using a student created Google site. At the end of each nine week period, students will showcase their work with the community and enjoy in a harvest feast.
