A 22 year old man is behind bars after leading Savannah-Chatham Metro Police on a wild chase through city streets early Saturday morning.
Theodore Rivers is facing several felony traffic offenses including hitting an SCMPD vehicle while fleeing from officers during an attempted traffic stop near an armed robbery scene.
Just before 2:30am. Metro Police responded to reports of a commercial armed robbery on the 5300 block of Skidaway Road. Metro officers responding to the robbery observed a Chevrolet Sonic loitering near the scene and driving erratically. So officers initiated a traffic stop near LaRoach Ave. and Skidaway Rd.
The Sonic didn’t stop and then ran at high rates of speed, resulting in collisions between a marked SCMPD patrol car, and three privately owned vehicles.
Three civilians were transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The Metro officer was treated for minor injuries at Candler Hospital.
While fleeing the original scene, the Sonic side swiped an SCMPD K9 unit on Truman PKWY near Eisenhower Dr, then continue traveling south on Truman. The Sonic’s driver lost control of the vehicle and came to rest in an embankment near Abercorn and Truman Parkway.
The driver, later identified as Rivers, attempted to flee, but was arrested by another Metro officer. Rivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated at MUMC. The Metro officer was treated for minor injuries at Candler Hospital.
Rivers is charged with fleeing to elude police officers, leaving accident and failure to give aid/ info, reckless driving, and failure to stop at a stop sign. More charges may be pending.
Metro investigators are still working to identify suspects in Saturday’s armed robbery on the 5300 block of Skidaway Road.

UPDATE: 4:00 a.m.-
According to a SCMPD spokesperson, a robbery of a business at the corner of Derenne and Skidaway led to multiple accidents Saturday morning.
At about 2:30 a.m., a Savannah Chatham Metro Police unit and 3 other vehicles were involved in an accident with a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of Laroche and Carmelia court near Skidaway.
The officer was not injured in that accident but the spokesperson could not confirm if anyone else was hurt.
The suspect’s vehicle fled that scene and was spotted again at Abercorn and Truman parkway.
When followed, it struck a metro K9 unit and went into embankment, officers were then able to take the driver into custody, no injuries were reported there either.

A wreck near the intersection of Laroche and Skidaway has shut down Laroche between that intersection and Wilemere drive.
Multiple vehicles including a police cruiser were involved in the accident.
