Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted murder that occurred early this morning on Seaside Road, St. Helena Island.

Marquise Johnson, 20, shot at a vehicle that had an infant, male and female passengers. Luckily, no one was injured and the vehicle wasn’t hit.

Johnson fled the scene into a wooded area near Ball Park Road. He is described as an African-American male, 6’02” and 195 lbs, wearing a black t-shirt and dark plaid pants during the shooting.

Due to this, St. Helena Elementary school was placed on a modified lockdown while police investigated the issue, the lockdown has since been lifted.

A modified lockdown does not mean there is an imminent danger to the students’ safety, but the students were kept indoors with no outdoor recess and closely monitored.

After being spotted in a wooded area, Sheriff’s Office deputies were able to catch Johnson. After an interview with investigators, he will be charged with the shooting incident that occurred this morning.

The handgun Johnson used has not been recovered.

Johnson also has an active bench warrant for his arrest after failing to appear in court for unrelated traffic offenses
