How to prevent kitchen fires on Thanksgiving

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Firefighters say they see more home cooking fires on Thanksgiving than other days throughout the year.

U.S. Fire Administration statistics show from 2011 to 2013, about 2,100 house fires were reported on Thanksgiving Day across the nation.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, the average number of house fires on Thanksgiving Day is more than double the average number of house fires they see on all other days.

Firefighters are offering up several kitchen safety tips this year.

– They say if you’re frying, grilling, or broiling food – stay in the kitchen.
– Don’t leave cooking unattended
– Regularly check your food; set a timer
– Keep a fire extinguisher close
– Keep kids away from the oven and stove top
– Keep oven mitts, packaging, towels, anything that could catch fire, away from the stove top
– Don’t wear loose clothing that could also catch fire
– If a fire starts in your oven, don’t open the door. Turn the oven off, and call the fire department.
– If you are frying a turkey, officials say make sure to do it outdoors, and not on a deck or in a garage.
