COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The South Carolina Supreme Court has disbarred a once-high-profile attorney who stole more than $2 million from his clients.
The justices released their unanimous decision Wednesday on former Lexington attorney Richard Breibart.
Breibart pleaded guilty in August 2013 to mail fraud. He was sentenced in March 2014 to more than five years in federal prison and ordered to pay back $2.4 million to more than a dozen of his clients.
The state’s high court said Breibart can’t apply for re-admission until he completes his sentence terms and pays more than $315,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors have said the Lexington attorney scared clients into thinking they could be facing possible investigations or Internal Revenue Service penalties and urged them to put hundreds of thousands of dollars into his law firm’s trust account.
