South Carolina’s Scrooges and Angels of 2015

The 20th annual Scrooges and Angels list was announced today, with ten angels and one honorary angel being recognized at a press conference and honored with a reception in the Secretary of State’s Office.

According to a news release, Angels recognized have all devoted more than 80% or more of its total sums to charitable program; must have received minimal funding from grants; be registered with the Secretary of State to solicit funds in the state of South Carolina. After a review of financial reports and nominations from the public were submitted the list was complied.

Listed below are the Angels in alphabetical order and are not ranked by the Secretary of State.

The list of Scrooges are based upon a charitable organization’s failure to spend a high percentage of it’s total earning on charitable programs. When selecting Scrooges the requirements were: charities devoting 45% or less or its earnings to charitable programs; charities that spend a significant amount of revenue on fundraising expenses; and the charities had to have registered with the Secretary of State to solicit funds in the state of South Carolina.

Secretary Hammond issued the following statement: “As Secretary of State, I have the duty of enforcing the Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act, and of promoting transparency and accountability for charitable organizations. South Carolinians continue to be among the most generous people in the nation; however, we must guard against those who want take advantage of our generosity. I ask you to research charitable organizations before you give to make sure high percentages are going to the organization’s program services.”
