Savannah’s City Council is working to give officers in one precinct a better place to help them stop crime.
The council Thursday voted to spend $445,000 to design and start pre-construction for the new SCMPD Central Precinct. The Precinct will be off MLK blvd, between 33rd and 34th streets.
The property will cost the city a little more than $1 million, buying it out from the lone property owners, Century Investors. In the process, the city says, will eliminate blight and attacking an area which has been a crime problem in recent years.
The current houses there will be torn down to build the 16,000 square foot facility.
The design phase will start next month, with construction scheduled to start in July of 2016. Construction is expected to finish in April of 2017.
No word yet on what the total cost for the new Precinct will be.
