Businesses, roads closed after several suspicious devices found in Florida

SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA)– Two businesses in Highlands County have been evacuated and a bomb squad is responding after three to six suspicious devices were discovered at the businesses.

A Highlands County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said that the devices were found at a Denny’s located at 4390 US Highway 27 and at Newsom Eye Center located at 3205 Physicians Way in Sebring.

US 27 is closed between Valerie Boulevard and the Sebring Parkway.

A Sebring Police Department spokesperson described a device found at the eye center as a chemical explosive. A bomb squad is at the Newsom Eye Center looking for additional explosives.

The police spokesperson said a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The suspect, who has not been named, was apprehended on Highway 27 and was carrying explosives in a backpack. The police spokesperson said the suspect had been making threats directed at the eye business.

The Manatee County Bomb Squad and the State Fire Marshal are on the way. The FBI and Highlands County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incidents.
