A woman from Mobile has turned herself in to Mobile Metro Jail after authorities say they found the corpse of her dead baby buried in her backyard.
Ashley C. Wilkins, 30, is charged with abuse of a corpse after the startling discovery was made at Wilkins home on Swansea Drive last week.
Earlier this evening, police could not locate Wilkins after they decided to file charges. However sometime around 9:00pm, Wilkins turned herself in to Mobile Metro Jail and was formally arrested. In the video below, you can see Wilkins exiting the jail at about 10:15pm, refusing to answer any questions posed by News 5’s Allen Carter.
According to Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich, authorities received a 911 call last Thursday with the caller stating they had discovered the corpse of a newborn infant buried in the back of the home.
“It had been there for what we consider to be a significant amount of time and had begun the decomposition process,” Rich told WKRG News 5.
“The baby was recovered, taken to the department of forensic sciences and is still currently undergoing an autopsy and investigation into this matter.”
