USS Cole Commemoration Held 15 Years After Attack

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Monday marks 15 years since the terror attack on USS Cole (DDG 67) in Yemen.

Naval Station Norfolk is hosting a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the USS Cole Memorial, to honor the lives lost aboard the Navy destroyer.

Terrorists in Yemen attacked the Norfolk-based ship back in 2000. 17 sailors were killed.

10 On Your Side spoke with several retired USS Cole sailors Monday.  They said time has helped them heal.

They don’t cry as much as they used to at the memorial ceremonies,  but they are still fighting for  justice.  Court hearings continue for the alleged bombing mastermind,  Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri at Guantanamo Bay .

“It  just seems we give that terror,  that individual,  more respect and more benefits then we do and I  think that’s a shame.  It’s been 15 years we just need to prosecute him,”  Joe Pelly told

Many victims and families here feel if the government had done more  after 10-12 there would not have been a 9-11.
