UPDATE: Pilot in Plane Crash Near Savannah-Hilton Head Int’l Identified

UPDATE:

At 8:56 PM on October 9, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport was notified that a general aviation aircraft had crashed on airport property.

The aircraft, identified as a Piper Cherokee Arrow, tail number N9312N, was en route to Savannah after departing from Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport.

Airport Fire and Rescue, handled by the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard, responded to the crash and found the plane resting in a treeline, west of Runway 10.

The pilot and one passenger were airlifted to a local hospital.

The aircraft is registered to Blue Jay Aviation, LLC and was piloted by Robert J. Mayer, 64, of a Miami, Florida address.

The plane was cleared from the scene early Saturday morning, and the Federal Aviation Administration regional office is currently investigating the incident on behalf of the NTSB.

The plane came to rest in a treeline, west of Runway 10.

Airport Fire and Rescue responded to the crash and the pilot and one passenger were airlifted to a local hospital.

The Airport was closed for a brief time but all arriving flights landed after slight delays.

As of early Saturday morning the aircraft was cleared from the scene the area will be closed off tomorrow to outside traffic.

According to a press release sent out by Lt. Col. David Simons, the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard reponded to a small plane crash at Crosswinds Golf Course.

Three firetrucks and eight emergency personnel from the 165th AW responded.

The 165th AW Fire Department, the first to the scene, were able to safely remove two people from the aircraft.
