There is no question that gun violence is an issue in our city.
A Shooting victim found last week on Diamond Causeway. Two men killed on barnes drive less than a week before that, and earlier this month, a woman shot in her home on Argyll road.
City leaders often comment on the fact that these crimes go unsolved because no one is willing to come forward.
“there are people out there that witness these things,” said Alderwoman Mary Osborne. “There are parents that know what’s going on – there are witnesses who won’t even testify against who shot them. We need your help. The police can not do it by themselves.”
Police say the fear of retaliation keeps many from telling police what they know.
That’s where Savannah-Chatham Crimestoppers can help.
The question everyone has about Crimestoppers, is my call really anonymous Won’t investigators be able to track me down if i contact Crimestoppers?
The answer, simply no.
“The point of someone calling anonymously is that usually they fear retaliation or they fear the system,” explains Crimestoppers Executive Director Dodie Gay. “Sometimes its mistrust, but every crime victim means something to us and to the law enforcement agencies we represent.”
We went to the Crimestoppers office, and found out no number pops up on the caller Id on the office phones when someone calls.
Everyone takes your tips, and any information helps. An address, a name, a suspect description. Something which could give investigators the lead they need to take a suspect off the streets.
Even though there is a cash reward connected to a tip that leads to an arrest, most folks aren’t looking to “cash in”.
“The incentive is they want to do the right thing they want to help, they want to be a part of the solution not the problem,” explains Gay. “And their silence conveys an acceptance of the problem. If you are going to be silent then don’t complain about crime in this community because that means you weren’t willing to get involved and change things in this community.”
Even if you do want to pick up a cash reward for that tip, you will never have to sign your name to anything.
40,000 people have already trusted Crimestoppers with their tips in the hopes that it will help stop crime in our area.
