This health report focuses on a checkup that could mean the difference between life and death.
Did you know that nearly 43,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year.
What’s even more jaw dropping -the fact that in the U.S. alone oral cancer kills one person every hour of every day.
Common names for oral cancer include mouth cancer, tongue cancer, tonsil cancer, and throat cancer.
To educate patients and save lives Howard Family Dental of Savannah is offering its new patients free oral cancer screenings.
Velscope is their new standard of care.
This handheld device shines a bright blue light into the mouth to show what is happening beneath the surface.
“It’s a way for us to visualize areas of concern in the mouth. It lets us look a little into the tissues than what we’re able to see with our eyes. It’s completely painless,” says Dental Hygiene Director Roni Copeland.
Right now a link between a common sexually transmitted infection and throat cancer raises the level of concern.
“Due to the human papillomavirus we are seeing more cases of oral cancer like I say in different populations than what we’ve traditionally seen oral cancer in,” explains Copeland.
Experts say changes in sexual habits may be the reason for the increase.
According to the oral cancer foundation when oral cancer is discovered early the 5 year survival rate is about 80 to 90 percent.
