Pope Holds Mass in Havana’s Revolution Plaza

Pope Francis is celebrating Mass before thousands of people in Havana’s Revolution Plaza.

The crowd erupted in cheers when Francis appeared in his open-sided popemobile.

As he made his way around the square, the pope stopped several times to kiss children handed up to him and to bless people in wheelchairs.

Cuban security personnel have detained at least three people who appeared to be trying to distribute leaflets ahead of the Mass.

The pope’s schedule today includes a private meeting with Raul Castro and a possible luncheon with Fidel Castro. The afternoon brings a vespers service and Francis’ first encounter with Cuban young people.
