Military chopper crashes in Japan

(NBC) – A U.S. military helicopter crashed off the island of Okinawa, Japan.

Patrol boats have been sent to search for the helicopter and its crew, but a spokesman for the Okinawa coast guard says all 17 people on board have been rescued.

The official adds that seven people were injured.

U.S. officials have not yet commented on the incident.

Aerial footage broadcast by NHK showed a black helicopter on the deck of a ship with part of its tail broken off. “United States Army” was clearly visible on the side of the aircraft.

Okinawa, an island more than 900 miles southwest of Tokyo, is home to the bulk of U.S. military forces stationed in Japan
