“Tarzan” Climbs Into SoCal Monkey Exhibit

SANTA ANA (KRON) — A 37-year-old man proclaiming to be “Tarzan” was arrested at the Santa Ana Zoo, where he was seen climbing walls and swinging from trees, police said.

Investigators believe a shirtless and mud-covered John William Rodenborn was high on drugs on Tuesday when he tried to break into the zoo’s monkey exhibit. Santa Ana police say he gained access to the zoo by scaling the walls and sneaking into the facility without paying.

Police say once he got inside, Rodenborn climbed onto the bird exhibit and then up a 20-foot tree screaming that he was Tarzan. Rodenborn then tried to get into the monkey exhibit, police said.

Zoo employees tried to secure the area and keep visitors away from the man. Police arrived a short time later and took Rodenborn into custody.

Police say he was in possession of methamphetamine and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
