The global metropolis of Beijing goes head-to-head against the little-know Kazakh city of Almaty to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee will choose the winner during a meeting in Malaysia on Friday, July 31.
Beijing, which hosted the 2008 summer games, is looking to become the first city to be awarded both summer and winter editions of world’s biggest multi-sport competition.
Victory for Beijing would also mean that Asia would host three consecutive Olympics after the 2018 winter games in Pyeongchang in South Korea and Tokyo’s 2020 summer games.
Almaty leaders admit their city’s bid makes them the underdog against Beijing, but the city in Kazakhstan won points with the Olympic committee through it’s “Keeping It Real” campaign.
However, neither city has been able to put an end to criticis of it’s governments’ human rights records.
