(NBC News) On Saturday First Lady Michelle Obama will attend opening ceremonies for the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, a movement founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver that touches more than 4.5 million athletes worldwide.
Nearly 7,000 athletes from around the world are gathering in Los Angeles for the games.
“I mean to see the adversity that our athletes go through,and how they overcome things…the passion they have just to get out there and do their best and get up and keep going, it’s a pretty powerful message,” says Canadian coach Mike McCarther.
Los Angeles International Airport welcomed athletes with the Special Olympic colors on the LAX pylons, and the torch traveled through every state over 46 days.
