Lafayette police say they know the identity of the gunman but are not releasing it at this point.
They do say he was an 58-year-old white man and he died of a self-inflicted gunshot.
The number of deceased has risen to three.
Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said at a news conference that seven additional victims were wounded and their injuries ranged from not life-threatening to critical.
Law enforcement are on scene of a shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, LA.
According to the Chief of Lafayette Police, at about 7:30 p.m. local time they received a call of an active shooter.
Six people are injured, some of those being life threatening and according to an ambulance official in the area three people are dead including the gunman.
Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft says they are sweeping the theater’s parking lot to see if any vehicles belong to the gunman.
The scene is said to be contained to the theater but they are still checking the area for possible explosives and Craft says they dispatched units to other theaters in the area as a precaution.
