(NBC News) Four marines and a gunman are dead following attacks on two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
A police officer and two other people were wounded before the gunman was shot and killed during a confrontation with police.
The gunman was identified by a senior federal official as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. He is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Kuwait.
Investigators say Abdulazeez first opened fire at a military recruitment station, firing dozens of shots into the building.
He then drove several miles to a Naval Reserve Center, where he again opened fire, killing four Marines. Several police officers engaged the gunman there, returning fire. At some point in the shootout he was killed, although investigators have not yet determined if he was shot by police or took his own life.
