Trial of Former SCMPD Officer Begins

A former Savannah-Chatham Metro Police officer will stand trial this week for violating his oath of office.

Jury selection began Monday in Malik Khaalis’ trial.

Khaalis resigned in December 2013 and was eventually indicted for his role in a drug trafficking probe.

Khaalis pleaded not guilty to charges of making official false statements back in 2010 to other Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team agents about his conduct during the drug trafficking probe that ultimately centered on Khaalis and Star Cpl. Willet Williams.

Investigators allege Khaalis tampered with evidence and compromised surveillance related to James Williams, Star Corporal Willet Williams’ brother.

James Williams was a suspect in a major drug operation back in 2010.

Williams was fired in 2014. He has not been charged with any crimes.

Khaalis faces 7 charges of making false statements and 2 counts of violation of oath of a public officer.

Testimony in Khaalis’ trial is expected to start Tuesday.
