A big decision favoring gay couples today.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that same sex married couples can start applying for social security and veterans benefits in all 50 states.
The decision comes after history was made last month when Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution provides a right to same sex marriage.
Billy Wooten with First City Network in Savannah says it’s great to see that no one’s dragging their feet.
“We’ve got veterans in Georgia thousand of them who are gay who maybe were expelled from the military for Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell or for other reasons that have really struggled who now would be eligible for benefits.”
Couples who lived in states that did not recognize same sex marriage are also eligible for federal benefits.
