The family of Dr. Jahannes will be having a private funeral. A public Celebration of Life will be held in a few weeks. Arrangements will be announced once plans are finalized.
Savannah is mourning the loss of a well-known educator and community leader. Retired SSU professor and renowned psychologist, poet, novelist, composer and playwright Dr. Ja Jahannes passed away Sunday night at the age of 72.
Jahannes’ works have been featured in publications alongside that of Langston Hughes, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Nikki Giovanni, and Maya Angelou.

His original play, Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly- a story about the Savannah Civil Rights Movement- was scheduled to open at the JEA Sunday, July 26th.
Dr. Jahannes retired in 2008 as the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Savannah State University.
