UPDATE:

A woman says she was raped in her own home and now police are searching for information.

According to law enforcement, a woman living in the Waverly Station at the Highlands apartment complex left her unit unlocked when she went to walk her dog at about 12:30 Monday morning.

When she returned, she says a man was waiting for her inside her home and after the attack, he walked right back out the front door.

One of the big issues police say this incident points out is the false sense of security that gated communities can sometimes provide.

“There’s a lot of apartment complexes and newly developed neighborhoods as well,” said SCMPD Crime Prevention Officer Bryan Harrell. “Always be keen of your surroundings, whether you’re going shopping, coming home, take a look around the parking lot, look in the shadows.”

If you’re concerned about the safety of your home or business, Harrell tells News 3 you can just give them a call and ask for a free security survey.

A crime prevention officer will check your landscaping, spots with poor lighting and identify other potential hiding spots for criminals.

If you have any information about the incident, you’re asked to call Crimestoppers at 912-234-2020.
