Emergency personnel are responding to reports of a shooting in downtown Charleston.

Charleston City Police Department, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, and Charleston City Fire responded just after 9 pm on Wednesday.

The Charleston Police Department says the shooting took place at 110 Calhoun St. which is the address of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The pastor at EMAEC is Clementa Pinckney, the South Carolina State Senator from Jasper County. According to an update from AP News, police are confirming nine people have been killed. Our sister station, WCBD, has confirmed that Senator Pinckney was among them. Police are also confirming that this was a hate crime.

Authorities are searching for a white male in his 20’s, wearing a gray sweatshirt (possibly a hoodie) and timberland boots. Authorities did take a white male into custody earlier, but he was released a short time later.

Our sister station in Charleston tell us about 30 emergency responders are on scene.
