UPDATE: Police have now identified the body found floating in the Savannah River Wednesday morning
An autopsy has indicated no foul play in the death of 53 year old Randall Lee Weller. His family has been notified. A passerby spotted him in the water near the 200 block of east river street around 8:30 Wednesday morning. Marine Patrol recovered the body.
Savannah Chatham Metro police are on the scene where a body was found floating in the river this morning.
Police were called to the 200 block of River Street near the intersection with Lincoln. Around 8:10 a.m. tourists walking along the riverfront saw the body floating in the water. Nick Urick and his wife are visiting from Eldersburg Maryland.
Urick says around 8:10 a.m. this morning, while walking along River Street by the river, they looked down to see the body floating in the water. Uric says his wife ran across the street and he called the police.
Eunicia Baker with the Savannah Chatham Metro Police Department confirms that detectives have launched an investigation in connection with the discovery. Baker says the body of a male has been recovered from the Savannah River.
She adds that six detectives and members of the violent crimes task force are on hand, but stresses that it is normal protocol for this situation. She says it’s too early to tell the cause of death and if foul play is a factor.
The investigation is ongoing.
