South Carolina state regulators approve the first of five pending permit applications to use seismic guns to search for oil and natural gas offshore.

According to the “Post and Courier,” the department of health and environmental control signed-off after Spectrum GEO agreed to several conditions.

The approval comes even though dozens of coastal towns and cities, including Beaufort and Hilton Head, have said they’re against offshore testing.

Savannah and Tybee have come out against it as well.
