Forty years to the day since the fall of Saigon, veterans in Effingham got together for the first meeting of a brand new VFW in Rincon.
The VFW is the first new post in Georgia in more than four years and many local vets said it was about time a post opened in Effingham.
“We need to talk to each other and all of that,” said Vietnam veteran Keith Cruse. “We’re brothers and sisters ever since we went there.”
Organizers say the post will open with about 50 members but they expect to to at least double within one year.
“There’s issues, we all have those issues, some of them more severe than others,” said GA State VFW Inspector, Rick Elder. “When you walk into a veteran’s hall, a VFW facility, you don’t have to explain what the issues are because everybody in there already knows.”
