A captain with the Lake George Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department died in an accident Wednesday afternoon.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Lyle Thurmond, Jeffery Driggers, 49, was behind the wheel of his Chevrolet C1500 when he went into cardiac arrest.

Driggers’ vehicle struck a tree at the intersection of Limerick Road and 4th Street outside Midway.

He died while enroute to the hospital, Thurmond said.

The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m.

Driggers served on the department for five years, officials said.

UPDATE 4/28/15

Captain Driggers was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon following a memorial service at Carter Funeral Home in Hinesville.

More than a hundred fellow firefighters joined family members for the service.
Afterwards fire trucks from several departments led a procession to Driggers’ final resting place at Daniel Baptist Cemetery in Bryan County.

A Go Fund Me site has been set up to help Driggers’ family pay his funeral expenses.

Organizers are hoping to raise $10,000.
