SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior Shermika Harris hit for a season-high 26 points to lead the Armstrong State University women’s basketball team to a 79-70 Peach Belt Conference women’s basketball victory over visiting GRU Augusta on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena on Homecoming.
The win keeps the Pirates (11-10, 9-5 PBC) in third place in the PBC East Division while GRU Augusta (5-16, 4-10 PBC) falls into a three-way tie for fifth place. Armstrong returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Francis Marion for a 5:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference contest against the Patriots in Florence, S.C.
Harris had 15 of her 26 points in the first half, hitting 5-of-9 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 three-pointers to help Armstrong build a 33-26 lead at the break. Armstrong was able to stretch that lead to double digits just four minutes into the second half, then used a 13-1 run midway through the second half to build a 20-point lead, 59-39, with 11:05 remaining.
The Jaguars cut that lead to nine, 66-57, with 5:44 left, but the Pirates responded with with an 8-2 run – capped by a Harris basket with 3:07 left – that built the lead back to 15 points, 74-59.
Harris finished the night with 26 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor, including her three three-pointers, and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She had reached 23 points previously twice on the season. Sophomore Brigitta Barta added 20 points, while senior Dee Hayward collected 16 points and senior Amber Howell came off the bench to add 10 points.
GRU Augusta was led by Kariel Hutt’s double-double of 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Camille Gee added 12 points.
The Pirates shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half (15-of-26) and finished the game hitting 49.1 percent (26-of-53). GRU Augusta shot just 38.1 percent for the game (24-of-63) and made just 4-of-12 three-pointers.
