Georgia Southern football coach Willie Fritz is getting his team ready for perhaps their biggest home game of the season. The Eagles host Appalachian State Thursday night in Statesboro.

The Eagles are 2-2 on the season with close losses to N.C. State and Georgia Tech. They’ve defeated Savannah State and Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama.

Facts and figures about the Georgia Southern Football team as the Eagles will play their first-ever home Sun Belt Conference game September 25th vs. Appalachian State, and play host to the first Thursday night game since the 1989 “Hugo Bowl.”
Georgia Southern is the top-ranked Sun Belt team in both scoring offense with an average of 43.0 points per game and scoring defense, allowing an average of 20.2 points per game. The Eagles lead the conference in four other categories (rushing offense, pass efficiency, red zone offense and red zone defense).
Two Eagles recorded their first career interceptions against South Alabama with sophomore safety Robert Brice and senior linebacker Edwin Jackson each getting a pick Saturday night.
Averaging seven total tackles in the last two games, sophomore defensive tackle Jay Ellison had a career-best eight at Georgia Tech and added six at South Alabama. He also accounted for one of the Eagles’ four sacks against the Jaguars and was credited with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Yards per carry average by Georgia Southern in 2014 with four of the five Eagles who have carried the ball more than 10 times this season averaging over 8.8 yards per attempt.
Georgia Southern has scored in all 16 quarters so far this year with at least a single touchdown in 13 periods. The Eagles scored four touchdowns vs. Savannah State (2Q) and three vs. Georgia Tech (3Q).
Coach Fritz’s winning percentage for games played on Thursdays with a 15-2 mark and a 17-2 record for games played on weekdays (89.5).
Georgia Southern’s red zone offense operates at 94.1 percent efficiency which would tie Michigan for 23rd place nationally. The Eagles have scored 16 times in their 17 trips in the red zone with 12 touchdowns and four field goals.
Number of yards of total offense allowed in the second half by the staunch Eagle defense. Georgia Southern held South Alabama scoreless in the second half and to the lowest point total by an opponent.
Number of yards rushing by sophomore Matt Breida, a career-best tota, as he earned the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week award following the Eagles’ win at South Alabama. Breida ran for two touchdowns and his total yardage included a 64-yard touchdown run to start the scoring.
The two institutions Georgia Southern and Appalachian State played their first football game against each other on Friday, November 25, 1932, the day after Thanksgiving that year. South Georgia Teachers College won the contest in Statesboro 33-0.
