STATESBORO, GA.– Georgia Southern scored early and often en route to a 6-0 women’s soccer exhibition win over The Citadel on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field. Taylor Burns scored twice with her first goal putting the home side up 1-0 with just three minutes gone.

“You obviously can’t complain when you win 6-0, but at the end of the day it was an exhibition and we were trying to work on a few things and get a lot of different players in,” said Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. “We highlighted our depth today and I think our possession was fantastic all over the field.”

Two goals by the Eagles in the first 10 minutes gave the Sun Belt newcomers a cushion over their former conference rivals. Burns struck from the top of the penalty area just three minutes into the game to stake the Eagles to a 1-0 lead. Melinda Lukas doubled the advantage in the eighth minute when she scored off assists from Burns and Nora El-Shami.

El-Shami got a goal of her own in the 23rd minute to run the lead to 3-0. Burns got her second goal with just under 14 minutes left in the first half with Jessica Scales and Lindsey Vasher assisting on the play.

The Eagles carried a 4-0 lead into the halftime with the Bulldogs registering just one attempt on goal. The Citadel would add a shot in the second half to finish the contest with two attempts, both which were saved by the Eagle goalkeepers.

In the second half, Renee Nance made the score 5-0 at the hour mark when the winger pushed forward. A free kick from Gabby Watson bounced wide to Nance in the danger area where the junior slotted the ball into the net.

In the waning minutes Georgia Southern pushed forward in search of a sixth goal. Two close offsides calls wrecked clear scoring opportunities, but the Eagles would get the timing right in the 89th minute for the final goal of the afternoon. Junior transfer Alli Brashear played a quality through ball to senior Sydnie Van Curen who coolly finished to add her name to the scoresheet.

Next up for the Eagles is the 2014 season opener with a trip to Francis Marion on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Georgia Southern then travels to UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 1 p.m.
