Islands YMCA Gymnastics Team Excels at Nationals
Local athletes represent the city of Savannah at National Competition in Tampa, FL
Last week the Islands YMCA gymnastics team traveled to Tampa, Florida for the 2014 YMCA National Gymnastics Championship at the Tampa Convention Center. 1,800 athletes traveled from across the country to attend the event. Prior to the competition, each of these youth athletes had to qualify to compete in this meet. The event consisted of a senior reception to recognize graduating high school seniors, an Olympic style Opening Ceremonies at the Raymond James Stadium and three days of Competition.
The Islands team represented the YMCA of Coastal Georgia Association as well as the city of Savannah. The team had 37 athletes travel to compete levels 1 through 8. These boys and girls did a fantastic job, winning a total of 105 medals. Of this medal count, 21 were gold medals, 24 silver and 14 bronze. One of the gymnasts, Brooke Avino, qualified and advanced to the Level 8 All-Around Finals, where she placed 21th overall in the country.
We are very proud of this group and all that they accomplished during their time in Tampa! To view the entire meet results and additional information about the event visit YMCAgymnationals.org
