Savannah, Ga.- John Michael Gant was five outs from a no-hitter in game one, and Gnats’ pitching allowed just one run in 14 innings to help Savannah sweep a doubleheader from the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (19-11/63-33) won the opener 5-0 and the backend 3-1.
Gant was terrific in game one, working his second seven-inning complete game shutout of 2014. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight to earn his 10th win of the season. He took a no-hitter into the sixth, when with one out, Lexington second baseman Carlos Garcia rolled a single through the right side of the infield, the only hit Gant allowed all day. He was trying to throw the first no-hitter by the Savannah franchise since 1989.
The Gnats broke on top with three runs in the third inning. Shortstop Yeixon Ruiz got the scoring started with a two-run homer to left for a 2-0 Savannah lead. Nelfi Zapata added an RBI double later in the inning. In the fifth, first baseman Dominic Smith singled home two runs as part of a 3-for-3 game.
In game two, Smith singled home a run in the fifth to complete the game’s scoring and finish Sunday with four hits.
Savannah starter Alex Panteliodis held the Legends (11-20/40-61) to one run in six innings of work in game two. The only run he allowed came on a long homerun by Legends’ first baseman Fred Ford, his eighth of the year.
Savannah 1B/DH Matt Oberste picked up a single in both games to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, the third longest in the South Atlantic League this season.
The Gnats will look for a four-game sweep of Lexington Monday night at 7:05 pm. Robert Whalen (4-0, 1.80) is scheduled to return from the disabled list.
