Georgia Southern Ranked Eighth in Sun Belt Coaches’ Preseason Poll
Eagles eligible for conference championship in 2014, but postseason waits until 2015
NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference today released the 2014 coaches’ preseason poll with Georgia Southern voted in eighth place with 44 points. UL Lafayette received all 11 first-place votes from the leagues’ coaches and was ranked first with 121 points. Arkansas State had 102 points in the poll for second place. The 2013 Sun Belt co-champions, both the Ragin’ Caguns and RedWolves won their respective bowl games last year.
The Eagles are eligible to win the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2014, their first year in the league, but will not be able to participate in postseason play until 2015.
Only four points separated South Alabama from Arkansas State for the third spot in the rankings with the RedWolves checking in with 98 points. The number-four through six teams differed by a total of 14 points, putting Troy fourth with 84 points, UL Monroe at fifth with 78 and Texas State in sixth with a 70-point total.
New members and former conference rivals Appalachian State and Georgia Southern were seventh and eighth, with 47 and 44 points, as voted by the league’s coaches. The Eagles play host to the Mountaineers for a September 25th Thursday night game on ESPNU, the first Sun Belt Conference game at Paulson Stadium.
Idaho earned 29 points from the coaches in the preseason poll for ninth while Georgia State and New Mexico State completed the rankings in 10th and 11th with 27 and 26 points, respectively.
Georgia Southern kicks off the 2014 season at N.C. State on August 30th with the home opener for the newly expanded Paulson Stadium on September 6th.
