You get the impression the Georgia Southern Eagles have no problem doing all the heavy lifting this week, as long as it means they get to play another weekend and continue their pursuit of a spot in the College World Series. “We know its gonna be a challenge.” Says Stryker Brown, Eagles outfielder. “We know that we’ll be playing some good programs that have some history. And doing well in the regionals, we’re excited to have the opportunity to play.” he adds. The Eagles flying high this week after winning the Southern Conference tournament in their final try on Sunday. Something they admit was the by-product of getting hot at the right time and also focusing just a little bit more on post-season play. “We knew that in order to make a run in the tournament it would need to be a total team effort.” says Georgia Southern Head Coach Rodney Hennon, now in his 15th year in Statesboro. “You’d have to have contributions from a lot of different guys. That’s what happened.”
Still none of that matters anymore. Its nice to be conference champions, but that won’t get you a timely hit or solid defense next weekend when they take on national power Florida State. “We know Florida State, Alabama and Kennesaw all have good programs. We know Kennesaw from playing them throughout the year. They have some good players.” says Brown
They aren’t shying away from the challenge These Eagles have been here before last in 2011. They know what it takes to advance, it’s just a matter of putting it all together one more time. “This is the goal every year.” says Hennon. “To get to the NCAA post season and have an opportunity to get to Omaha. That’s the ultimate goal for our program in order to make those big things happen we need to focus on one game at a time.”
Georgia Southern will play Florida State Friday night at 6pm. The game can be seen on ESPN3.
