RELEASE FROM ARMSTRONG SPORTS COMMUNICATIONS:
Montel Baines Earns 58th Annual Ashley Dearing
– Armstrong Atlantic State junior forward Montel Baines was
awarded the 58th annual Ashley Dearing Cup today for leading the 2013-14 Pirate
men's basketball team in free throw percentage.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Baines hit 61-of-79 free throws
this season for a 77.2 percentage. The USC Salkahatchie transfer averaged 7.9
points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 26 games for the Pirates this season in his
first year with the squad.
The award, established by long-time Savannah area sports
supporter Ashley Dearing, was first awarded in 1955 to emphasize the importance
of the free throw. Today's award was presented by Ashley's wife, Angela. The
Savannah community lost Dearing, an Armstrong Atlantic State Athletic Hall of
Fame citation winner, in March of 2009, but Mrs. Dearing has committed to
carrying on the tradition of the Ashley Dearing Cup in his honor.
