Armstrong Pirates Swept by Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Young Harris College baseball squad used two big innings to down visiting Armstrong Atlantic State University, 19-7, and earn a Peach Belt Conference sweep of the Pirates on Sunday afternoon at Zell Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions (16-15, 6-9 PBC) earned its first Peach Belt Conference series sweep of the season while handing Armstrong (15-11, 7-8 PBC) its first league sweep of the campaign.
Armstrong took an early 3-0 lead by scoring two runs in the first inning – on an RBI single by Clayton Miller and an RBI groundout by Ryan Patterson – and a single run in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk to Patterson.
Young Harris answered by sending 10 men to the plate in a six-run second inning that featured four walks, two errors and an RBI single by Tom Valichka to put the Mountain Lions up, 6-3.
Armstrong got one back in the fifth on Cody Sherlin's RBI single to draw to within two, 6-4, but Young Harris' Josh Rudnik launched a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 10-4.
The Pirates closed to within three with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by R.J. Dennard's solo home run, but Young Harris put the game out of reach with a nine-run bottom of the eighth inning.
Mitchell Dolan (1-4) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up three hits and six runs – two earned – in 1 2/3 innings of work, walking five while striking out two. Taylor Topping (2-3) picked up the win in relief for the Mountain Lions, hurling 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball, walking four.
Miller led the Pirates offensively with a 3-for-6 day with two RBIs, while Rudnik went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI to lead Young Harris.
Armstrong returns to action on Friday, March 28, hosting Francis Marion in the first game of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at 2:00 p.m. at Pirate Field.
