SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State University baseball squad plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Lincoln Memorial, 9-8, and take the non-conference series from the Railsplitters on Sunday afternoon at Pirate Field.
The Pirates (15-8) have now won five of their last six games with the victory, while Lincoln Memorial (16-9-1) drops its third game out of its last four with the loss.
Armstrong entered the ninth inning trailing the Railsplitters 8-7. LMU closer and reigning NCBWA National Player of the Week Josh Coker got the first batter out in the inning, but hit Armstrong batters R.J. Dennard and Ryan Patterson in succession to put the tying and go-ahead runners on. Berry Aldridge then singled to left field to load the bases.
Dalton Johnson hit a slow roller to short. Isaac Woody flipped to second baseman Jean Rodriguez for the second out, but Rodriguez' relay to first to try and get the inning-ending out hit the dirt and got past the first baseman Kelvin Brito, allowing pinch runner Nathan Ward to score from second with the winning run.
Ryan Good (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the Pirates, hurling 3 1/3 innings of two-hit, one-run ball, striking out two. Coker (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season in relief, giving up three hits and three runs – two earned – in 2 1/3 innings of work, striking out one.
The Pirates opened up the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning for the early 3-0 lead. Brett Hart singled in a run, then Cody Sherlin followed with a two-RBI double for Armstrong.
Lincoln Memorial answered with six runs in the top of the third inning – highlighted by a three-run home run from Brito – to take a 6-3 lead.
The Pirates battled back to tie the game at 6-all with a single run in the third inning on R.J. Dennard's RBI double, then two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Tyler Avera and an RBI fielder's choice by Clayton Miller.
LMU retook the lead in the fifth on Brito's second home run of the day, a solo shot to lead off the inning. The Railsplitters then added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Jacob West. The Pirates closed the gap to one in the bottom of the seventh on Berry Aldridge's RBi single, setting the stage for the ninth-inning heroics.
Sherlin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Pirates at the plate, while Aldridge, Miller, Hart and Corey Crunk all had two hits. Brito led the Railsplitters with a 3-for-4 day with two home runs and four RBIs.
Armstrong returns to action on Wednesday, March 19, traveling to Benedict for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference contest with the Tigers.



SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 4-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University softball squad ran its win streak to 12 with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of Lander on Sunday at the Armstrong Softball Field. The Pirates won game one, 4-3, and took game two, 8-0, in five innings.
The win streak is the longest for the Pirates (21-5, 6-0 PBC) since an 18-game win streak during the 2012 season, while Lander (6-20, 0-4 PBC) saw its losing streak reach eight with the doubleheader loss.
The Bearcats used three solo home runs in the first game to take a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Aubrey Lamar hit a solo shot leading off the second inning and Destiny Clyde followed with a one-out solo home run in the third. The Pirates' Lacye Walker collected an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, but Emily Marousek led off the top of the fifth with her solo home run for Lander.
The Pirates' Alexis Mercer reached on a throwing error by Lamar to lead off the bottom of the fifth. After Lander starter Mary Katherine Pegram (1-7) retired the next two batters,Hannah Reppert battled Pegram in a 16-pitch at-bat to draw a walk and keep the inning alive, leading to senior Kat Vogler, who homered to left field to put the Pirates in front, 4-3.
Armstrong starter Ollivia McLemore (14-2) then pitched out of a bases-loaded two-out jam in the sixth and retired the order in the seventh to close out the complete-game victory. McLemore went seven innings and gave up five hits and three runs, walking one while striking out seven for the win.
Pegram took the hard-luck loss for the Bearcats in game one, giving up six hits and four runs – one earned – in six innings of work, walking six while striking out two.
Armstrong freshman Jane Trzaska (5-1) limited the Bearcats to just one hit in five innings of work, walking one and striking out two as the Pirates completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 five-inning win in game two.
Senior Andrea Dalton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, including a home run, to pace the Pirates at the plate in game two. Haley Ellis also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Taylor Crawford (3-7) took the loss in game two for Lander, giving up two hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings of work, walking one and striking out three.
Armstrong returns to action on Friday, March 21st, hosting Columbus State in a 2:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at the Armstrong Softball Field.
