From Armstrong Sports Information:
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Ethan Bader hurled a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out nine to lead the Pirates to a 5-3 win in game two of a non-conference doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at Pirate field, earning a split with the Railsplitters. LMU took game one, 6-0.
Bader gave up three runs and walked none in improving to 6-0 for the Pirates (14-8), who have now won four of their last five games. Lincoln Memorial moves to 16-8-1 with the split.
The second game of the doubleheader was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Armstrong plated four runs against LMU starter Zac Butler (3-4). Butler retired the first two batters in the inning, but a line drive by the Pirates' Dalton Johnson to third base was ruled a trap by the Railsplitters' Jacob West instead of a catch, and West's throw to first to try and retire Johnson sailed over the first baseman's head, putting Johnson on third with two outs. A walk to Cody Sherlin followed by an RBI single by Tyler Avera put the Pirates on the board, 1-0.
A walk to Clayton Miller then loaded the bases for R.J. Dennard, who stroked a two-RBI single to right field to make the score 3-0. Ryan Patterson followed with an RBI single to right to push the lead to 4-0.
Lincoln Memorial answered with three runs in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Kelvin Brito and a two-out, two-RBI double by Kyle Floyd.
Bader gave up a leadoff single in the seventh, but then set down the final nine Railsplitters in order to pick up the victory. His nine strikeouts on the day bring his career strikeout total to 227, passing Joey Williams (219, 1997-2000) for second on the Armstrong all-time strikeout chart.
Butler gave up eight hits and five runs in seven innings of work to take the loss for the Railsplitters.
Offensively, Miller went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Johnson went 2-for-4 and Dennard drove in three runs with a 1-for-3 day to lead the Pirates. Burlison and Jason Rodriguez had two hits apiece for LMU.
Game one was a stellar pitching performance by Lincoln Memorial's Logan Sawyer as he spun a five-hit shutout, striking out seven to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Tyler Allen (1-2) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up seven hits and five runs – three earned – in 4 1/3 innings of work, walking two while striking out three.
Lincoln Memorial scored in each of the first three innings to build a 4-0 lead. Kelvin Brito's RBI groundout in the first pushed across the first run of the game, then with the bases loaded and one out in the second inning, Brito lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored the second run, but Brett Madden doubled off the Railsplitters' Scott Miller at second base for the inning-ending double play.
Floyd and Burlison each delivered RBI doubles in the third, which was more than enough offense for Sawyer in the contest. Floyd went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead LMU offensively, while Tyler Avera was the only Pirate player with multiple hits in game one as he went 2-for-4.
The non-conference series wraps up with a single game on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Pirate Field.
