RELEASE FROM GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY:
Wolfes Named a Top-50 Player to Watch
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern golfer Scott Wolfes (St. Simons, Ga./Glynn Academy) has been named a Top-50 Male Player to Watch this season by Golf World in its college preview.
A PING all-region selection, the Southern Conference Golfer of the Year and an All-SoCon selection for the second consecutive season, Wolfes won two tournaments, placed first or second in five events and posted seven top-10 finishes for the Eagles in 2012-13.
The junior continued his high level of play into the summer, advancing to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. He qualified by surviving a five-hole playoff and sinking a 20-foot putt for birdie on hole 18 at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course in July.
On day two of stroke play at the U.S. Am, Wolfes fired a 67, the lowest score of the day at The Country Club, to tie for ninth and advance to match play. He then topped Mario Clemens, who won the Mexican Amateur Championship in June, 2 and 1, to move to the round of 32. Wolfes advanced to Sectional Qualifying, the final stage for U.S. Open hopefuls, by earning co-medalist honors in his local qualifying tournament May 13.
Georgia Southern opens the 2013-14 season by traveling to Notre Dame for the Fightin' Irish Collegiate Classic Sept. 23.
