Senior Citizens, Inc. will host its 3rd Annual Miles for Meals 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Daffin Park. One-hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit our local Meals on Wheels program which provides a hot, nutritious meal to seniors throughout Coastal Georgia.

Run, walk, or race with Senior Citizens, Inc. for a morning filled with fun, laughter, and excitement for the entire family. You'll leave knowing you have made a difference in the lives of seniors in your community.

The 5k Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. at Daffin Park and pass through Police Memorial Trail before ending in front of Grayson Stadium. Food, drinks, and awards will be distributed after the race. Sponsors for the event include: The Savannah Bank, Kole Management Company, Seacrest Partners, International Paper, Atlantic Container Services/LanPort, Inc., Willis Insurance, Wells Fargo, Fleet Feet Sports, Play Hard Event Timing, and Fred Langley Photography.

Through its Meals on Wheels program, Senior Citizens, Inc. delivers more than 1,800 hot meals each day to seniors throughout coastal Georgia, while at the same time offering them a friendly midday visit.

In many cases, these seniors are homebound and this one daily meal is their only source of sustenance. It takes just $6 a day to provide a hot, nutritious meal to a homebound senior, yet more than 600 seniors, at or below the Federal poverty line, await nutrition support in Chatham. County alone! And Georgia ranks number six on Meals On Wheels Association of America's “Top Ten Hunger States” list, based on a recently released research study, with nearly one in every twelve seniors in Georgia being at risk of hunger.

Senior Citizens, Inc. took the Meals on Wheels Association of America's pledge to end senior hunger by 2020. This action is a simple, deliberate, and dynamic way to help end a serious problem in a decade or less. The Meals on Wheels program of Senior Citizens, Inc. is committed to ending senior hunger in our community, knowing what is done locally will have a huge impact nationwide.

The mission of Senior Citizens, Inc. is to help people age successfully. For more than fifty years, the organization has worked to provide direct services that allow seniors to remain in the homes of their choice for as long as possible. Services are provided throughout six counties in southeast Georgia and include home-delivered meals, in-home support, senior companions, senior activity centers, adult day care and The Learning Center.
